Overview: I have used Hot Stix Golf in the past and have always appreciated the quality of their work. Their attention to detail is second to none and they ARE THE EXPERTS in the industry. I obviously was only asking for a very small portion of what they do but, as always, they were eager to fulfill my request. Here's a little background on that request. I received a set of Limited Edition Black Titleist AP3s and wasn't getting the most out of the clubs. After talking to the team at KBS Golf Shafts they sent me a set of Limited Edition C-Taper Lite Black shafts (4-AW) to give a try. Now, like a kid at Christmas I wanted everything set up now so I could tee it up in 2 days at our friendly weekend skins game. I began calling around to a few shops near me and they all were happy to do it but wanted 3-4 days to complete the work. I talked to "Fergie" Chris Ferguson at Hot Stix and he said bring them up and we will do our best to get them done for you. I must point out others had said similar things but I knew the work would be perfect at Hot Stix. So, I drove by 4 other shops and delivered everything to their team. More on the outcome in a bit..

From Hot Stix: Fitting Services And What To Expect

ALL FITTINGS ARE PERFORMED OUTDOORS TO SEE TRUE BALL FLIGHT AND FEEL TURF INTERACTION

Prior to the fitting the player will receive a questionnaire about their game and what their goals are. Upon arrival we will do a quick evaluation of their current equipment (loft, lie, length, shaft frequency and swing weight). During this time the player will be able to warm up on the range. When the fitting begins, we will have the player hit a series of shots to gather data on Trackman and determine baselines for the players swing and tendencies. At this time the player will then test numerous shaft and head combinations until the proper fit and set make-up is met. Measurements for club length, lie angle, grip size and weight will also be taken. Upon completion of the fitting the player will receive a detailed analysis of the fitted equipment along with a price breakdown for the custom build. Since everything we do at Hot Stix Golf is 100% custom, pricing is done based on each individual manufactures component (head, shaft & grip). Purchasing the fitted equipment is coordinated through the players personal club fitter and all clubs are built to spec by Hot Stix Golf at our corporate headquarters in Arizona.

Needless to say I was extremely excited and really looking forward to getting my clubs back. They removed old shafts, spined new KBS shafts, added 1/4", soft stepped them once, tipped them to maintain stiffness, added new Golf Pride MCC Grips, perfectly aligned labels and my clubs were ready to go faster than I expected! Quality Work - Excellent Service!

First up - The Range to dial in distance and get a feel for the new shaft set up. I added 6-8 yards per club (from stock shafts) and I was at my desired trajectory with every iron. These shafts are very accurate/consistent and my little draw was going where I wanted it to. This definitely has a lot to do with how Hot Stix set them up! While the range was fun I couldn't wait to hit the course to see what they do under pressure in a skins game! 

I specifically keep track of what club I hit into greens when I play. I had my 4-GW fit with these shafts and I hit 11 of 13 greens in round one! In round two much of the same hitting 12 of 14 greens with the same clubs. This is a one to three greens in regulation improvement from prior club set up. Overall after just two rounds I am extremely impressed and happy with the work performed by Hot Stix. I will have them swap out my wedge shafts next, go through a putter fitting and have them fit my woods so my entire bag is dialed in!

Go Time Golf Testing Session: We started our testing on the putting green. We found a 10 foot putt with a cup of right to left break in it. We then aligned the laser on the exact path that the putt needed to start on and hit 10 putts. I am a straight back and through putter so if my putter didn't stay on the laser it provided instant feedback. I did stop my putting stroke a few times because the laser told me it was not a good takeaway. I rolled in 9 of the 10 putts and saw the extreme value of SQRDUP!

Next we picked a "random" golfer on the putting green who wanted to know what we were doing. This golfer hit a few practice putts and then took our "10 putt challenge". He made all 10 of his 10 foot putts after just a few minutes of practice time. One of the findings was I thought I was lined up "square" to the ball while putting but found that when I looked at laser line and my feet I was actually closed to the target line of the putt. After hitting a number of putts a "square" stance became routine and felt normal. There are just so many benefits to SQRDUP on the putting green.

                                       

SQRDUP on The Range: Well, well, well more great alignment feedback from SQRDUP. First up some 75 yard wedges. We aligned SQRDUP at the flag, then put a ball on the laser line, aligned our stance to be square with the target, and found the proper ball placement for a "normal" trajectory shot. 

Wow, birdie after birdie opportunities with that 58 degree wedge! However, I did notice that my divots were NOT in front of the laser line that the ball was on. I made a few minor adjustments with my swing and focused on getting that divot in front of the line. Next thing I notice I am compressing the ball much better and gained about 6-8 yards with this wedge. Lets test this out with mid irons now! Much to my surprise more of the same except a few more yards gained with my 5-7 irons. I saw gains of 8-12 yards with them. We found a ton of other benefits of SQRDUP during our testing. Want to hit a draw or fade? Simply open or close you stance slightly to the perfect laser lines from SQRDUP. I typically use set up sticks for this but must say that SQRDUP takes ALL the guess work out of alignment perfection. Also it is extremely easy to see changes in ball position for a high, mid or low shot with SQRDUP. We believe that the uses of SQRDUP may be endless as we just kept finding more applications with it! 

One of our testers took it to hit pitch shots from a hill over a bunker. He set it up so the laser hit a spot on the green where he wanted to land the ball. His feedback was the tripod allowed him to set the laser quickly and held it's awkward position very well resulting in dialing in the perfect pitch to where he needed the ball to land. 

Then he stepped in the trap with it and set the laser 1-2" inches behind the ball, had the club enter on laser line and started hitting some very creative bunker shots immediately. SQRDUP does it again!
