Go Time Golf Review: Papago Golf Course
Course Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Overview: Papago Golf Course is owned by the city of Phoenix and has
always been rated as one of the best courses in Arizona. The course went
through a $5.8 million restoration in 2008 that gave Papago the character it
posses today. It’s located just minutes from downtown Phoenix and provides
golfers with an extreme challenge to go along with it’s beauty. I had the
pleasure of playing with Patrick Gibbons of Gibbons Hand Made and Papago’s GM
Jesus Martinez (now with Top Golf).
Pros:
This course has 5 sets of tee boxes
and if you’re up for the ultimate challenge the tips play over 7300 yards. For
those of you who like to walk this is an extremely friendly course for you!
Their green fees are very fair and this is a must play track!
Cons:
Due to the fair pricing on greens
fees it may be difficult to get out on short notice. It’s not a country club.
It’s a municipal course that’s loved by many! Also the pro shop and snack bar
could be larger.
Challenge: From the tips it’s all the course you can handle rated at 75.0
and a 130 slope! Move up one set of tees and enjoy a 72.0 rating with a 125
slope. Three of the four Par 3’s play over 200 yards from either set of tees
with the longest (#8) measuring a short 253 yards! Enjoy!
Condition: When we tee’d it up at Papago Golf Course it was in excellent
shape and I was told that it’s always in great condition by their staff.
Everything from tee to green was more than acceptable especially for the low
cost to play such a great track.
Favorite Hole: My favorite hole was the par 3 11th – partially because it was
the only par 3 under 200 yards and the water added beauty to a still difficult
par 3.
Amenities: Papago has a very nice practice facility, offer “Players Club”
cards, provides golf instruction and their staff welcomes Golf Outings and
Tournament Events!
Go Time Golf Factor: Papago is a must play course if you’re in or visit the Phoenix
area. I will return and continue to refer others to this great Municipal
Course.
